By Sherri EllingtonThe way has been cleared for Lamar County to put a 100 foot radio tower at the new fire station, improving communications for public safety personnel and eventually helping to provide internet service to citizens. On Jan. 21, the county commission held a public hearing and approved its own special exception application for the tower, which is higher than the zoning code’s 35 foot limit in a manufacturing-2 zone, 3-0 with commissioner Bennie Horton absent.’There was no opposition at the called planning and zoning hearing’ or by other means, said zoning administrator Dan Gunter. ‘It appears our citizens would like to have better communication between our fire department and law enforcement.’Chairman Jay Matthews noted the multipurpose tower is the first step in countywide web service for all.’We’re actually the ones erecting the tower,’ Matthews added. ‘We’re not going to turn ourselves down.’ In addition, emergency personnel radios in use now have been recalled and replacements are on the way.’That’s what the company feels we’re having here with our communications problems,’ said county manager Bob Zellner.
