County okays grave relocation permit

The Lamar County commission voted 3-2 Thursday evening to approve the relocation of graves from the historic Wadsworth-Clayton Cemetery for industrial expansion. Descendant Cynthis Wadsworth appealed to commissioner not to proceed, arguing they were not the proper permitting authority. She said the family had not filed legal action in hopes the county would do the right thing. She has vowed now to file suit. Another descendant, Mike Ross, told the commissioners they had been ‘bamboozled’ by the city. After hearing and participating in discussion, commissioner Bennie Horton made a motion to approve the city’s permit request. Commissioner Ryran Traylor seconded. Those two voted in favor of granting the permit with commissioners Robert Heiney and Nancy Thrash opposed. Chairman Charles Glass broke the tie, voting in favor and the permit was approved.
