If approved by the state legislature, Lamar County will soon have an appointed rather than an elected county surveyor. The county commission voted unanimously January 13 to submit local legislation enacting the change to its legislative delegation.Commission chairman Jay Matthews noted the county is required by law to have a surveyor but is one of only nine in the state filling the post through election.Current surveyor James Butler is expected to be appointed to the post when the change is made.
