County slashes budget; must cut much more

By Sherri Ellington Faced with revenue shortfalls, the Lamar County commission plans to reduce its 2010 budget by $523,416. The numbers were determined during a July 8 work session. ’We’re $1,576,000 short of revenue including $710,554 from 2009,’ said county manager Wayne Patterson. At the end of the meeting, he noted the county is still short $822,950 with more cuts expected in September as non-essential items are identified. The cuts thus far: ’¢ Commission office, $5,650 ‘¢ Discretionary, $116,215 ‘¢ Board of elections, $2,000 ‘¢ Tax commissioner, $16,810 ‘¢ Tax assessors, $22,601 ‘¢ Courthouse annex, $4,000 ‘¢ Courthouse, $2,250 ‘¢ Service center, $11,500 ‘¢ Old Jail Museum, $10,723 ‘¢ Probate court, $3,250 ‘¢ Fire department, $8,000 ‘¢ DFACS, $10,700 ‘¢ Emergency Manage, $4,000 ‘¢ Public health, $13,500 ‘¢ Senior center, $1,200 ‘¢ UGA Extension, $5,587 ‘¢ Building and zoning, $5,400 ‘¢ Superior court clerk, $11,255 ‘¢ Recreation/ag arena, $12,675 ‘¢ Magistrate court, $2,700 ‘¢ Sheriff, $250,400 ‘¢ Conservation admin., $3,000
