DA has GBI file in sexual battery case

By Walter Geiger Though it arrived too late to present to the March term Lamar grand jury that is convened this week, Towaliga Circuit district attorney Richard Milam now has the GBI case file regarding a sexual battery charge lodged against Barnesville city councilman Sammie Shropshire. Milam said the case will likely be taken up by the next grand jury which convenes in June. Shropshire is currently free on a $1000 bond. Shropshire surrendered Dec. 29, 2014, shortly after then chief magistrate William Thomas signed a warrant for his arrest requested by two GBI agents. The charges arose out of allegations that Shropshire made unwanted advances toward a female nursing assistant at Heritage Inn and touched her inappropriately. Shropshire, 63, represents Barnesville’s Ward 3. He assumed his council seat in 2004 and is a former mayor pro tem.
