Deer collision brings out lifeflight; victims improving

A Barnesville couple suffered serious injuries Thursday morning when their 1991 Mercury Marquis struck a deer on Highway 41 North near the Pike County line. The victims were identified by GSP spokesman Mike Maynard as Shelby Copeland, 75, and his wife, Marion Copeland, 76, both of Edgewood Circle in Barnesville The deer, a large buck, went through the windshield and died in the backseat. Marion Copeland, the most seriously injured of the two, reportedly suffered an open skull fracture and was lifeflighted to Atlanta Medical Center. She was improving Thursday evening and expected to be moved from ICU. Shelby Copeland was transported by ambulance to an area hospital. A dog in the car was also injured.
