Deputy bitten; shoots assailant

The LCSO is working a shooting on Old Hwy. 41 near the burned out Lighthouse in which a deputy was bitten. Her assailant was shot. UPDATE: Sheriff Brad White has issued a news release identifying the woman shot by Major Leslie Holmes Friday morning. Sheriff Brad White said Major Leslie Holmes stopped a car and was questioning a female when a struggle for Holmes’ gun ensued. The woman bit Holmes, taking a chunk out of her arm. Holmes was forced to shoot the suspect in the arm. A GBI crime scene analysis unit is on the way to process the shooting scene. UPDATE: PRESS RELEASE Lamar County Sheriff’s Office May 23, 2014 Earlier today, the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office experienced an officer involved shooting. Major Leslie Holmes encountered a suspicious vehicle and upon investigating the vehicle and the vehicle operator, an intense struggle ensued. Joy Lynn Day, of Griffin, was shot by Major Leslie Holmes. Ms. Day is being treated for the gunshot wound at a nearby hospital. Major Holmes received injuries during the altercation and is being treated for the injuries at a nearby hospital as well. We ask that everyone keep Ms. Day and Major Holmes in your thoughts and prayers. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was immediately requested to investigate this incident. Lamar County Sheriff’s Office and GBI are still investigating the scene. -Sheriff Brad White
