The Barnesville-Lamar County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that the 2009 BBQ & Blues committee will be awarding its 2nd Annual scholarship in memory of the late Mayor Dewaine T. Bell. Immediately following the death of Mayor Bell, the committee met and discussed ways of honoring him. What better way than through music, education, and the school he loved most. Mayor Bell was a key factor in developing the BBQ & Blues Festival and it has grown leaps and bounds since it began in 2005. He wanted to bring people to downtown Barnesville to show off the town he called home. This year’s festival will be dedicated in memory of him. The Dewaine T. Bell Scholarship will be awarded to a Lamar County High School senior who has a passion for music and plans on attending college in the fall of 2009. The application deadline is March 31st. The scholarship will be awarded Saturday, April 25th during the Saturday night blues concert at Ritz Park. The scholarship is paid for by festival sponsorships as well as memorial paper pig sales. These memorial cut out pigs will be available on April 1, 2009 and displayed around town at local merchants for $1, $5, and $10. Be sure to purchase a pig to support this wonderful scholarship opportunity.Applications are available at the Lamar County Comprehensive High School main office, at the Chamber of Commerce office located at 100 Commerce Plaza, and on the Chamber of Commerce official BBQ & Blues site at http://www.bbqandblues.orgFor more information please call Amanda at (770)358-5884.
