Dollar Tree to locate in old Walgreen’s store

Discount retail giant Dollar Tree will open a new store in the old Walgreen’s location at the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Rose Avenue. Renovations to the building are underway. ’We have issued the building permits for Dollar Tree. They began work on the building Dec. 5,’ Barnesville city manager Kenny Roberts reported. Dollar Tree has well over 5000 retail locations nationwide and a large distribution center in Savannah. It’s stock is public traded on NASDAQ. The company dates back to a Ben Franklin store opened by founder K.R. Perry in Norfolk, Va. in 1953. The former Walgreen’s building is owned by Agree Limited Partnership of Deerfield, Il. The 14,859 square foot building was built in 2007 and is located on a 2.4 acre commercial lot. It is taxed at an assessed value of $1.59 million. The Walgreen’s unit there closed on Feb. 28, 2017. The Dollar Tree opening is not the only one anticipated along Veterans Parkway. O’Reilly Auto Parts, which has long been seeking a local location, is planning to build nearby on the lot between Zaxby’s and Akin’s Farm and Home. ’We are in communication with the civil engineering firm for the permitting of the O’Reilly site adjacent to Zaxby’s. It has not been finalized yet,’ Roberts added. Rumors continue to swirl regarding the land on which the now abandoned Williams Funeral Home sits. That site is reportedly prized by developers who wouldl locate a Burger King/Taco Bell combo fast food operation.
