Downtown convenience store likely to be torn down

A popular convenience store in downtown Barnesville will soon be closing its doors after its owners learned their lease will not be renewed by the consortium that owns the property its is built upon. B&L Quick Service and the adjacent laundromat will be closing this fall. ‘We were told our lease would not be renewed,’ proprietor Darlene Hickman reported last week. The store sits on a half-acre site that is owned by Hawk Group LLC and has served customers since the early 1970s. Hawk Group was registered with the state in 2005. Its registered agent is Jay Letts of a Greystone Road address in Atlanta. The three-quarter acre lot adjacent to B&L, which is the site of Hardee’s, is owned by Raptor Group LLC. Raptor Group also owns an adjacent 4.51-acre parcel which is home to the lumber yard across from Balamo Building Supply and the shopping center which houses Giant Mart and Family Dollar. Raptor Group was also formed in 2005. Letts is its registered agent as well. There are indications the B&L building will be razed to make room for new development. Speculation centers around Family Dollar and Burger King locating on the site. Developers tied to Dollar General and a Burger King franchisee have been openly seeking locations here for some time. The Barnesville city council shot down plans for a new Dollar General on a residential lot at the corner of Thomaston Street and Veterans’ Parkway earlier this year. The two LLCs acquired the properties from Will Hill Newton Jr. in 2006.
