Early primary voting underway

Early voting for the Super Tuesday March 6 Presidential Preference Primary starts Monday, Feb. 13 and goes through March 2 at the Lamar County board of elections and registration office. For the first time, mandated Saturday voting will be available Feb. 25. Office hours for early voting will be 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1:30-5 p.m. The deadline to register to vote in the March election has passed. There are nine Republican Presidential candidates on the ballot even though only four remained at presstime. The general primary nonpartisan election and T-SPLOST vote is July 31. Local offices up for election include county commission districts four and three currently held by Jimmy Hearn and Nancy Thrash; board of education members for district one now held by Horace Hightower and district three represented by longtime chairperson Susan Byars. Also up for election are the magistrate judgeship, currently held by William Thomas; probate judgeship with incumbent Kathy Martin; clerk of superior court, currently held by Frank Abbott, and tax commissioner with incumbent Andrea Anthony. Coroner Jim Smith’s position is also on the ballot. Sheriff Larry Waller will not seek reelection. Major Brad White, who is also chief deputy, has announced his intention to run for sheriff and is the only candidate who has announced thus far.
