ELITE 8: LC soccer hosts critical playoff matches Monday and Tuesday

The LC soccer teams got hard-fought victories last week in Sweet 16 soccer battles and moved on to the Elite 8 round of the GHSA state soccer playoffs.

The Lady Trojans (8-7), now ranked #10, will battle the #5 Atlanta International School Eagles Monday night at Trojan Field. First touch is set for 6 p.m.

Despite their high ranking, the Eagles (9-7) were the #4 seed from their region which consists of 10 metro area private schools. The Eagles topped Armuchee 5-0 in the first round of the playoffs and bested Rabun County 3-0 in round two.

The two teams have no common opponents for the season.

The Lady Trojans (8-7) are the #1 seed from their region. They topped the Bryan County Redskins 2-0 last Tuesday to advance. The Redskins packed the box defensively but seniors Samiya Smith and Maci-Lauren Lanier managed a goal apiece to key the win. The Redskins had no shots on goal and attempted just one free kick and two corner kicks.

The Trojans (8-7) are also ranked #10 in the latest poll. They host the #3 Whitefield Academy Wolfpack (15-4-1) Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Trojan Field. The Wolfpack beat Dalton Academy 3-2 in round one of the playoffs and BAASA 2-0 in round two.

The two boys teams also do not have a common opponent.

The Trojans advanced after a dramatic, come-from-behind win over Metter 4-3 here Wednesday.

LC trailed 3-0 after 55 minutes when Axel Garcia scored a goal to make it 3-1. With under eight minutes left, Caleb Miller hit Joe Davis with a long pass and Davis converted the goal to make it 3-2.

Just over a minute later, Miller was fouled in the box and converted a penalty kick to tie the match at 3-3.

With time running out, Davis hit Miller with a long lead pass and Miller beat a defender and the keeper to get the clincher and LC held on for the win. Hayden Cherry had a key assist for LC in the contest.
