Escapee gets prison sentence

A 24-year-old Douglas man who escaped from the local jail here May 24, 2020, was sentenced to four years in prison and six years on probation March 2 in Lamar superior court. Julian Tyler Veloz was on kitchen detail and walked away from the jail while taking out the trash. The escape triggered a massive search. A review of video revealed Veloz had been picked up by an accomplice. Veloz was captured June 23, 2020 in Coffee County when he drove up to a residence where deputies were questioning his father. Mario Alberto Veloz, 47, was charged with aiding an escape. His case was continued last week due to the lack of an interpreter. Judge Arch McGarity sentenced Veloz in the absence of Judge Bill Fears who was ill. At the time of the escape, Veloz was in jail on charges of theft by receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm by a first offender probationer and obstruction. He was sentenced on that count as well.
