Escapee still on the run

A 23-year-old Hispanic man who fled the Lamar County jail May 24 remained at large at press time Monday. Julian Tyler Veloz was a trustee and on kitchen detail when he fled while taking out the trash at about 2:20 p.m. The escape triggered a lockdown and search involving officers and dogs from multiple jurisdictions. The search was halted after a review of surveillance video revealed Veloz had been picked up and left the area in a black sedan. His jail phone records were reviewed and one number stood out. That phone was pinged on I-75 shortly before it was disabled. Sheriff Brad White reported Monday the investigation revealed Veloz was affiliated with a gang. His deputies worked with law enforcement in Appling and Cook counties in recent days to search known gang areas in and around Adel and Baxley for Veloz to no avail. The search is ongoing. Veloz was in jail for obstruction and theft by receiving stolen property. Prior to being linked to the gang, he was not thought to be dangerous.
