ESF goal set at $15,000

By Sherri Ellington The Empty Stocking Fund is working to raise $15,000 to help at least 91 children in 61 local families celebrate Christmas this season. ’We decided to accept Empty Stocking applications one more day to give those who missed the first two days an opportunity to apply,’ said organizer Vicki Forsyth. ‘We’ll take applications Thursday, Nov. 13, from 3-6 p.m. at the city fire station. Please bring proof of income or assistance for the household and Social Security numbers.’ Families who were approved for the charity can be adopted by individuals, organizations, churches and businesses. Those interested in donating toward the goal or adopting a family can call Forsyth at 770-584-6096. Donations of toys and money can be dropped off at the city fire department. ’So far most requested items seem to be Doc McStuffins and Frozen items for girls and for the boys Ninja Turtles top the list,’ said Forsyth. Forsyth is also a local distributor for Toys for Tots. Applications are available through Monday, Dec. 8 at the city fire station. Those who apply but do not qualify for the ESF will automatically qualify for Toys for Tots. In addition, A.D. Smith Community Service and the Lamar County sheriff’s office are also accepting Toys for Tots applications through Tuesday, Dec. 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at the E.P. Roberts Center. Applicants must go to one or the other sites to apply for Toys for Tots, not both. Database information is shared so anyone approved for ESF shouldn’t apply for Toys for Tots. Requirements for Toys for Tots include a valid photo ID and Social Security numbers for each child ages 12 and under. Applications from both sites will be submitted to the Marine Corps League Detachment 1196 in Griffin which will provide Toys for Tots. Applying does not guarantee any assistance which is based on the number of gifts donated. For information call 770-358-3311.
