The Field Turf playing surface is currently being installed at Trojan Field. A crew from Chatsworth is installing the turf. (video after the jump) The turf – plastic blades of grass attached to a plastic backing – is laid down over a bed of crush and run gravel that has been compacted. The turf is in 10-yard sheets which are sewn together. The white lines are sewn on in between sections. Over the weekend, the hash marks will be cut in. Next week, the coaches boxes, yard markers and the art at midfield and in each end zone will be added. The turf does not lay upon a padded surface. The padding, 8.9 pounds of powdered rubber per square foot, will be added atop the surface with a device similar to a fertilizer spreader. It works its way down in between the plastic blades of ‘grass’.
