Fire chief finalists named

The Lamar County commission announced the three finalists for the position of county fire chief at its regular meeting Tuesday night. The position was vacated last year when Chief Steve Andrews fell ill and subsequently died. Current interim fire chief Douglas Matthews, a Barnesville native trained and nurtured by Andrews, is among the three. The others are James Dycus, who is currently a fire chief in Alaska but has ties to McCaysville, Ga.; and William Collier of Atlanta who is retired from the Atlanta Fire department. ”We had a lot of great candidates,” county adminstrator Bob Zellner reported. The commission will meet again in two weeks to name the new chief.
