First of two political forums is tonight

With the July 31 general primary rapidly approaching, two forums are scheduled locally to allow citizens to evaluate the candidates in several races. The Chamber of Commerce altered its forum schedule, canceling the first session which had been set for Monday night. Now a single chamber forum is set for Thursday, June 28 at 6 p.m. at the Barnesville Civic Center featuring candidates for county commission district 3, chief magistrate, state house district 131 and U.S. Congress district 3 although incumbent Congressman Lynn Westmoreland is not expected to attend. There will be no forum featuring candidates for sheriff. It will be held prior to the November general election since none has primary opposition. Additionally, there will be no forum for the district four commission seat in that John Samek has dropped out of the race. Amberly Ferris is chairing the chamber debate committee, also sponsored by Farm Bureau. Questions for remaining candidates are being solicited. The forums are being moderated by Herald-Gazette publisher Walter Geiger. For information call the chamber office at 770-358-5884. The Lamar Republican debate committee will host all three candidates for the 3rd District U.S. congressional seat at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, in the school system’s fine arts center. Doors will open at 6 p.m. The three candidates are Rep. Westmoreland, who has confirmed his participation in this event as have challengers Kent Kingsley and Chip Flanegan. The local Republican party will not meet in July due to the forum. For information contact 678-588-1619 or midgatp@gmail.com
