John Flath resigned his position as head football coach Thursday morning during a meeting with LCHS principal Dr. David Boland. Flath faced a major rebuilding project when he arrived here prior to the 2017 season and has been a steadying influence on the program which some thought had been in decline after a 2013 appearance in the state championship game.”I am very grateful to Dr. Boland for the opportunity to be here. In my twenty-six years of coaching I’ve never experienced an administration that, from the top down, is as committed to creating the best possible experience for the community it serves. This administration understands the importance and values the role athletics plays in the educational development of young people. Their support and desire for excellence is humbling. I am grateful for the relationships we’ve developed here and thankful for all the community leaders who have assisted and supported the program with their time, talents, and treasures,” Flath said in a statement to The Herald Gazette.Flath has recommended assistant coach Jeff Sloan be promoted to the head coaching job.Much more on this story in the 2.12.19 print edition of The Herald Gazette.
