Football star brothers square off here Friday night

By Walter Geiger As if there were not enough drama surrounding the matchup Friday night between Lamar County and Mary Persons, the game will pit two brothers, each a star in his own right, against each other. There has always been a great rivalry between the two teams who played each other annually for many years. Last year’s ‘Lightning Larceny’ game only added to the hype for Friday night. There is an added dimension this week in that the game will pit brother against brother. Lamar’s Chris O’Neal, a 5-10, 200 pound senior guard/outside linebacker, will go against his brother, Dan O’Neal. Dan is a 5-10, 234 pound junior nose guard. Chris was Lamar’s player of the week against Pike County. Dan was MP’s player of the week last week against Washington County and is up prep player of the week for middle Georgia for his performance in that game. He had five tackles, one tackle for loss, and returned a fumble 22 yards for a touchdown in a 38-14 win over Washington County. The players’ father, Randy O’Neal, is already nervous. “It is challenging having two sons playing against each other. My stomach is already in knots and it is only Wednesday,” he said. Linda O’Neal, the boys’ grandmother, is also nervous but her allegiances are not torn. “We’ve got to have the win. They stole it from us last year. I just hope there is no lightning this time,” she said. MP is 2-0. Their other win was a 28-21 victory over Jackson in two overtimes. Lamar is 1-1 with a loss to Howard and a big win over Pike County. Kickoff Friday night at Trojan Field is set for 7:30 p.m.
