Former LCSO captain arrested

A former captain with the Lamar County sheriff’s office has been arrested and charged with taping a ‘stinger grenade’ to an inmate’s neck. The incident allegedly occurred on July 9, 2007. Grier T. Smith, 34, was a patrol division captain when he allegedly taped the device to the neck of inmate Edward Lee Shepard. He is charged with violation of oath of office and aggravated assault. Shepard, 39, was in jail on a disorderly conduct charge at the time. The device was described as a ‘riot control stinger rubber ball grenade’ by sheriff Larry Waller. More arrests may be forthcoming.
