This holiday season why not give yourself the gift of health? As of December 5, 2009 fourteen states are reporting widespread influenza activity; a decline of 11 states from the previous week. They are: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia.Almost all of the influenza viruses identified so far continue to be 2009 H1N1 influenza A viruses. These viruses remain similar to the virus chosen for the 2009 H1N1 vaccine, and remain susceptible to the antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir with rare exception. To combat such illness, the Lamar County Health Department is prepared to administer both FluMist and flu shots including the FREE H1N1 vaccine. With a large supply and more being shipped during the first quarter of 2010 the health department is quite vocal about the necessity of these vaccines. The facility is open from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and then again from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and there are no appointments necessary. You can find out more by calling 770.358.1483.Pregnant women as well as people age 6 mos. to 24 years and their household contacts are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated this season.
