Despite multiple denials by all parties involved, rumors of Gordon College buying Summers Field from the City of Barnesville and starting a football program arose again last week Gordon president Dr. Larry Weill promptly laid them to rest yet again. ’Nonsense. We have not talked with the city regarding Summers Field and we are definitely not starting a football program,’ Weill said. Barnesville city manager Kenny Roberts concurred. ’There have been no such discussions,’ Roberts said. The future of Summers Field will be the focus of design efforts later this year. ’We aren’t going to do anything down there until late first quarter or early in the second quarter of this year. We want to wait and see what the field’s final use will be – whether or not it will be a venue for special events. Then the design process will start and we will be soliciting citizen input,’ Roberts concluded.
