Gordon seeks to update Gold Star Heroes list for memorial

Construction will soon begin on the Military Memorial on the campus of Gordon State College, and there is one very important task to complete. ’We want to make sure our list of names that will go on the Wall of Honor is as complete as possible,’ said Rhonda Toon, vice president of advancement at Gordon State College and coordinator of the Memorial project. ‘The list we have is on the Military Memorial site at http://www.gordonstate.edu/militarymemorial The names of the fallen included on the Wall do not have to be Gordon graduates, but can be of anyone who ever attended or worked at Gordon and died while in service and during any war or conflict.’ For months Gordon alumni, friends and employees have been scouring microfilm reels and going through archived campus newspapers and yearbooks. Names have been checked against alumni records, but there are still more to check. Making sure the list is as complete as possible is important. ’Gordon veterans have many markers and monuments throughout our national cemetery system, as well as at private resting places,’ Toon said. ‘Our fallen Gordon graduates and faculty are named in state memorials and on The Wall in Washington, D.C. However, there is no place where all this comes together, no place to tell the story of Gordon graduates, faculty and staff who served and gave their lives in defense of this nation.’ ’The campus memorial will bring everyone together at a place where memories were formed, friendships developed, and life lessons learned,’ Toon said. ‘It provides a permanent memorial accessible to all ‘“ students, faculty, family, and friends alike.’ To share information on a name that is not included on the list or one that is included in error, contact Toon at rhondat@gordonstate.edu
