Of the 153 Lamar high school students taking the entire Georgia High School Graduation Test this school year, 60.1% passed all sections on the first try. Students have another chance over the summer to pass the test, expected to raise the final numbers.’As you can see by the numbers that follow, there are different sections of the GHSGT,’ said superintendent Dr. Bill Truby. ‘Some students might pass all or some of the sections. If they were unsuccessful in one section, they’re not included in the 60.1%. Also, test sections are administered on different days.’To receive a full diploma, students must pass each of the four portions of the test: English/language arts, math, science and social studies. The GHSGT is being phased out this year. They also must pass the Georgia High School Writing Test, which was administered separately.’Each year, the tests get tougher and tougher,’ said Dr. Truby. ‘This is because of the change-over to Georgia Performance Standards and the National Core Curriculum. It’s hard to hit a moving target. We work hard and our teachers especially work hard in making sure our students do the best they can.’
