From Capt. Tony Ranieri, Spalding County sheriff’s office:Last Wednesday afternoon, 9 November 2011 the Cowan Road Middle School Resource Officer and teachers were busy after receiving information that a juvenile brought a gun to school according to Sheriff Wendell Beam. After the 13 year old juvenile was identified a search of his wall locker and book bag turned up a CO2 type BB gun. The juvenile was taken into custody and charged with Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds and later released to his parents. The juvenile will face disciplinary action from the school and also have to face a Juvenile Court Judge on the criminal charges said Sheriff Beam. Sheriff Beam stated that because of the zero tolerance with weapons being brought to school this type of weapon appeared to resemble a real firearm and could have turned out worse than it did if the juvenile would have been able to produce the weapon during a confrontation. Sheriff Beam urges any student in the Griffin Spalding County School System that knows of another student bringing any type of weapon to school either on the bus or at school to contact the authorities at school of the School Resource Officer’s so the student and the weapon can be removed.
