A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Gordon State College Student Recreation Center is set for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16.The 55,000-square-foot Center will be built at the corner of College Drive and Highlander Way in front of Alumni Memorial Hall. Alumni Memorial Hall, built in 1963, will remain a part of the Gordon State College Campus.The center will contain a basketball court with seating on both sides of the court and a stage area at one end, weight training and cardio workout areas, game room and lounge, multi-use area, food court and food preparation area, offices and storage areas. The total project budget is $13.7 million and is being funded by a $139 facility fee that students Preliminary construction has started. The center is expected to be completed in early 2015.The groundbreaking ceremony will be held on the lawn in front of Alumni Memorial Hall, adjacent to the construction site. Parking is available in the student parking lot near Alumni Memorial Hall on Highlander Way. The public is invited to attend.
