A 20-year-old Gordon State College student was killed just before midnight Saturday after she was struck by a hit and run driver on Rose Avenue in Barnesville.Police have begun searching for a Saturn automobile in connection with the case.UPDATE: The victim’s identity has been released. Craig Cooper of BPD identified her as Alexandra Desir of Locust Grove. At 3 p.m. Sunday police were still searching for the driver that struck Desir and fled the scene.Lamar County coroner Jim Smith said the woman was walking to her job at Huddle House when she was hit. The driver fled the scene. Police are searching for the vehicle which should have some damage to the passenger side, Smith said. The driver was westbound on Rose Ave. when the vehicle struck the victim.A couple on their way to Crossroads saw the woman walking in the roadway. On their return trip, they saw her laying on the sidewalk, stopped and called police. Smith said the woman died instantly. Her body was taken to Bentley & Sons Funeral Home where blood work was drawn.Smith said the young woman was a good student and well liked by her employer.UPDATE: Gordon State College has issued a statement on the fatality.’The Gordon State College family extends its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Alexandra Noelle Desir,’ said Tamara Boatwright, Gordon State spokesperson. ‘We are all heartbroken at the tragic loss of this young woman’s life.’
