GSP probing incident in which city officer struck, killed two pedestrians

Details are sketchy but the Georgia State Patrol is working an incident overnight Thursday-Friday in which a city police officer reportedly struck two pedestrians with patrol car. The pedestrians did not survive. UPDATE: Coroner Jim Smith has identified the victims. UPDATE 2: The officer involved has also been identified. UPDATE 3: The Barnesville P.D. has issued a news release on the incident. The officer reportedly left Hot Shot pursuing a vehicle southbound on Veterans Pkwy. which was running without headlights. The two dead pedestrians were in the roadway near the intersection of Grove St. and Veterans when struck. UPDATE: The victims in the accident, which was called in at 1:03 a.m., have been identified by coroner Jim Smith. One victim was Justin Sullivan of 107 Parkview Dr. in Barnesville. Sullivan, the grandson of late, longtime Barnesville police officer Alonzo Taylor, died on his 25th birthday. The second victim was Quinton Byrd, 21, of 1475 Hwy. 83 South in Forsyth. At 9 a.m. Friday, officers from the GSP SCRT team were on the scene. There is dash cam video from the officer’s patrol car to aid in the investigation. The victims were crossing from Reliable Mart to the town side of the four lane when struck. UPDATE 2: The officer involved was Terry Belvin, 44. He was treated and released at a local hospital. UPDATE 3: The Barnesville P.D. has issued a news release on the incident but it reveals no new information. Release follows as received: ON MAY 16, 2014, AT APPROXIMATELY 0102 AM, A BARNESVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT OFFICER WAS INVOLVED IN A VEHICLE ACCIDENT WITH PEDESTRIANS . THE OFFICER WAS TRAVELLING SOUTHBOUND ON VETERANS PARKWAY JUST SOUTH OF GROVE STREET, WHEN HE STRUCK TWO PEDESTRIANS CROSSING THE ROADWAY. THE TWO PEDESTRIANS WERE PRONOUNCED DEAD ON THE SCENE. THE ACCIDENT WAS TURNED OVER TO THE GEORGIA STATE PATROL SPECIALIZED COLLISON RECONSTRUCTION TEAM FOR INVESTIGATION. NO FURTHER DETAILS AT THIS TIME.
