Hammonds to be awarded French Legion of Honor medal

Already the area’s top-decorated World War II veteran, Joseph J. Hammonds has been named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. The Legion of Honor was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. An award ceremony will be set via the office of the Counsulate General of France in Atlanta with details to be announced later. Hammonds, father of Steve Hammonds and Jolynn Maddox who works at United Bank and grandfather of state Rep. Billy Maddox, was known in newspaper accounts of the day as ‘Upson’s One-Man Army’ because he killed 71 German soldiers in the Battle of Aachen.
