Herald-Gazette story leads to arrests

By Sherri Ellington The Barnesville police department has made an arrest in the financial transaction card fraud scam against local businesses thanks to its being featured on the Herald Gazette website on June 25. On July 12 Investigator Ernie McWhorter received a call from a business in Macon who stated the same card fraud had been committed. ‘The caller said they had seen the fraud alert on the Herald Gazette website,’ said Investigator Al Moltrum. One of the business employees followed the individuals up I-75 and Mc-Whorter contacted Lamar County Deputy Brandon Goins who was out on I-75. He spotted the vehicle and pulled it over. The two individuals in the vehicle had warrants for their arrest from DeKalb County. They were identified as Marcus Ferguson and Ashley Hughley. Hughley has been identified as the female who made the fraudulent purchases in town on April 4. She is being charged with theft by deception and financial transaction card fraud. There are no local charges on Ferguson but both subjects are persons of interest in surrounding counties on similar criminal acts, Moltrum said.
