The Herald-Gazette brought home two prestigious awards from the Better Newspapers Contest ceremonies held in conjunction with the Southeastern Newspapers Convention last week in Destin, Florida. The convention brought together newspaper publishers, editors, writer and photographers from Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The Herald-Gazette took first place in local news coverage for newspapers its size. In addition, publisher Walter Geiger won a first place award in the photo essay competition for his pictorial coverage of the April 28, 2011 tornado that struck Barnesville-Lamar County.
