Highlanders begin regional baseball playoff action today

The GSC Highlanders (50-7) won three straight games in the GCAA baseball tournament last week in Albany and advanced to the East Central district title series at Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tennessee this week. Gordon plays a three-game series against #4 Walters State (50-9) with games beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and the ‘˜if’ game set for 2 p.m. Friday. Should they advance, the Highlanders will go to the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado May 25-June 1. UPDATE: Gordon lost game one Wednesday 5-2 and must now win two straight to stay alive. Cole Phillips had a two-run HR in the first inning to account for all the GSC runs. Dominic Canale took his first loss of the season on the bump for GSC. UPDATE(2): GSC lost game two 5-4 and was eliminated from postseason play. Ranked #3 in the nation, GSC opened state play with a 4-3 win over South Georgia that went 11 innings. Garrett Houston got the win in relief for Gordon, going 2.2 innings, scattering four hits and striking out three. Paul Grazzini had a two-run double to lead the Highlander hitters. In game two, Gordon walloped East Georgia 12-3. Jesse Sherrill led the Highlander attack with four hits and four RBIs. Adam Leverett got his ninth win against no losses on the bump, going seven innings and allowing only three runs on four hits and striking out six. Cory Newsome had a perfect inning in relief of Leverett to close out the win. Gordon was again matched up with South Georgia in the title game and finally won a grueling game 18-11 after a four-hour struggle. The Highlanders got three runs in the eighth and five in the ninth to finally blow it open. Ethan Scott and Derek Wylie homered for Gordon. Wylie added a double and drove in four runs. Kolby Johnson got the win while Houston got the save in relief.
