Highlanders win, advance to NJCAA World Series

The Gordon Highlanders defeated Middle Georgia College Monday to advance to the NJCAA World Series. The Highlanders routed Middle Georgia 14-7. Highlander hurler Kevin Burgey got the win. Gordon is one of only 10 junior college teams nationwide to advance to the World Series. -Greg Parrott Remainder of coverage by Ken K. Green: They couldn’t win the battle but they did win the war. One week after falling to Middle Georgia in the GCAA championship game, the Gordon College Highlanders knocked off the Warriors on their own field in Cochran to win the NJCAA East Central District tournament and a berth in the JUCO World Series which gets underway this weekend in Grand Junction, Colorado. The baseball team is the third squad from Gordon College to advance to a NJCAA tournament this year joining the men’s basketball and women’s softball teams. The 25th ranked Highlanders will open JUCO World Series play Sunday in Grand Junction against Alabama champion and Southeastern District representative Shelton State. The Buccaneers are unranked at 37-21. Game time Sunday for Gordon vs. Shelton is set for 9:30 p.m. local time. The ten team double elimination tournament includes top ranked Iowa Wesleyan, fourth ranked Jefferson (Mo.), fifth ranked Polk State (Fl.), tenth ranked Cisco (Tx.), fourteenth ranked Neosha County (Kan.), fifteenth ranked Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.), seventeenth ranked San Jacinto (Tx.) and twentieth ranked Western Nevada.
