Historic night: Lamar teams host soccer playoffs Friday

By Ken K. Green Lamar County will host post season soccer for the first time in school history when the Lady Trojans and Trojans entertain the Lady Hurricanes and Hurricanes of Fitzgerald for the first rounds of the GHSA state tournament this Friday at Trojan Field. The girls match kicks off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Trojans finished the regular season 9-6-1 overall and 6-2 in Region 4-AA where they came in second place scoring 70 goals (4.4 per game), the most in the history of the program, while allowing 1.9 goals per game. ’While our offense usually gets the most recognition, our defense has done a tremendous job for us while flying below the radar,’ said Lady Trojan coach Wayne Calvert. Starting goal keeper Sydney Moore has an average of allowing 1.08 goals per game that she has started. The Lady Hurricanes (10-6-1) come in as the number three seed from Region 1-AA. The Fitzgerald girls average 5.1 goals per game scoring while allowing 3.5. The Trojans (7-8) are also 4-AA’s second seed, barely missing out on the region title when Putnam County outlasted Monticello 1-0 last week. The Lamar boys score an average of 2.3 goals per game while surrendering 3.4. The Hurricanes (9-7) finished third in Region 1-AA and come into Friday’s match scoring 3.7 goals per game while yielding 3.4.
