House races heat up

While Sen. Ronnie Chance of District 16 remained unopposed just 30 minutes prior to the qualification deadline, three of the four state representatives whose districts include a portion of Lamar have drawn opposition. As expected, Bill Mauldin qualified as a Republican to do battle with District 126 incumbent David Knight, also a Republican. A third candidate has climbed into the ring in the District 125 race to replace Rep. Jim Cole who is not seeking reelection. Mary Alice Carter of Mansfield, Ga. entered that race as a Republican. Also running are Republican Susan Holmes and Democrat David Gault. Rep. Billy Maddox of District 127 also faces a stiff challenge from fellow Republican Spencer Price.
