Hurricane watch: Lamar-Monticello preview

By Ken K. Green Lamar County continues its quest for a third consecutive Region 4-AA title this week when they host Monticello at Thunder Alley. The Trojans are 5-0 for the season and 2-0 in region play. When and Where: Friday 7:30 p.m. at Trojan Field. Tickets: All tickets $7 at the gate. Advance tickets are available at Slice’s Pizzeria on Main Street at the gate price of $7. There are no discounted tickets at the schools this week due to fall break. Weather: Clear skies, zero percent chance of precipitation, temps in the upper 60s after a 70 degree kickoff. There is a Hurricane watch but the Thunder will roll. Last week: The Trojans beat Northeast 50-19 in Macon. Monticello (2-3, 0-2) comes to town on the heels of region losses to Taylor County (21-19) and Northeast (29-6). The Hurricanes opened the season losing to Morgan County (35-7) but racked up over a hundred points in wins over Social Circle (56-0) and Jackson (57-35). Last year: Lawrence Austin rushed for 129 yards on five carries including touchdown runs of 14 and 89 yards and caught a 43 yard pass in a 56-13 romp in Monticello. The ‘˜Canes went on to a 2-8 campaign finishing seventh in 4-AA with a 1-6 region record. Series: The Trojans lead 4-2 winning the last three. Monticello won the first meeting in 1972 8-3. The last Hurricane win was 21-0 in the first round of the state playoffs in 1992. Monticello has never beaten Lamar in Barnesville but was 3-1 against Gordon Military in the late 50s, early 60s. Trojan offense vs. Monticello defense: Lamar is scoring 40.6 points per game while the Hurricanes are yielding 24. Monticello offense vs. Trojan defense: The Hurricanes are averaging 29 points per game while Lamar yields 13.6. Top Hurricane players: Jacob Cavender, Tra Jackson, Jordan Stone, Quincey Standifer, Lane Thomas, Walt McMichael. Hurricane coach: Eddie Roberts 7th season overall (23-44), 4th at Monticello (10-25) also coached at Elbert County and Johnson County. Rankings: Lamar County is 3rd in Class AA in a composite ranking of six polls including a number one ranking by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Monticello is the 44th best team in AA according to Max Preps. Prediction: Lamar County 55 Monticello 13. The Trojans are 36 point favorites per Maxwell Ratings.
