Impaired driver badly hurt in crash

A Griffin woman received traumatic injuries in an early morning crash on Martin Dairy Road June 21. Katlin Nicole Shelton, 26, of 55 Mangham Rd. in Griffin was eastbound in a black 1997 Ford Mustang at 2:59 a.m. when she lost control. The sports car veered into the westbound lane in front of a home at 270 Martin Dairy Rd. It returned to the eastbound lane, rotated clockwise then rolled numerous times for about 300 feet. It came to rest on its roof in the yard of a residence at 256 Martin Dairy Rd. Shelton was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car, suffered incapacitating injuries and was unconscious at the scene. She was flown by medical evacuation helicopter to the trauma unit at the Macon Medical Center. The Georgia State Patrol report links the cause of the crash to impairment. Shelton faces charges of DUI, possession of controlled substances, failure to maintain lane, driving on the wrong side of the road and no seat belt. At last report, Shelton was in critical condition.
