James L. Gilbert

James L. “Jimmy” Gilbert, age 79, of Barnesville passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2014. Mr. Gilbert was born at his maternal grandparents home in Pike County on November 27, 1934, to the late Mr. Lucius S. Gilbert and the late Fannie C. Gilbert. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Jessie James Clark and “Mama” Clark, and Ludie Mae Dean. Mr. Gilbert was a 1953 graduate of Gordon Military College, Auburn University and Mercer University, majoring in math and physics. The William Carter Company, Lockheed Aircraft Corp. and Gordon College employed Mr. Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert retired from Gordon College in 1997. Mr. Gilbert was a member of the First Baptist Church of Barnesville where he served as a Sunday School teacher, a choir member and a Deacon. Mr. Gilbert served on the Lamar County School Board for eight years. Most importantly, Mr. Gilbert was a Christian. Mr. Gilbert is survived by his wife, Erin Kirkland Gilbert; one brother, Ronald Lee Gilbert Sr. of Barnesville; one brother-in-law, Ned Kirkland of Lizella; a niece, Kathy (and Larry) Wallace of Houston, Texas; a nephew, Ronald (and Doris) Gilbert Jr. as well as several other nieces and nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews, of which he thought of each as his own. Funeral services for Mr. James Lucius Gilbert were conducted on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Barnesville with the Rev. Garth Forster and the Dr. Dan Crawford officiating. Interment will follow in Lamar Memory Gardens. The family received friends at the First Baptist Church on Saturday, March 22, 2014 from 12:30 p.m. until the service hour. The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 Zebulon Street, Barnesville, Ga. 30204 (www.fbcbarnesville.com) or for “The Jubilaires” c/o The Baptist Missions Center, Art: Music and Worship Ministries, 6405 Sugarloaf Parkway, Duluth, Ga. 30097-4092.
