Joseph Alfred Medcalf Sr. Obituary

Joseph Alfred Medcalf Sr., 80, of Barnesville, died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012 at his residence. Mr. Medcalf was born April 1, 1931 in Thomaston, Ga. to the late Joseph A. and Martha Medcalf. He was formerly employed with the Lamar County Sheriff’s Department where he attained the rank of Major. Mr. Medcalf was a teacher and counselor for 35 years at R.E. Lee and also Gordon College. He served his country in the U.S. Army for many years. Mr. Medcalf was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Frances Russell Medcalf. Survivors include his daughters, Mrs. Laurel and David Blount of Thomaston, Ga., Mrs. Leigh and Shawn Hall of Savannah, Ga.; son, Mr. Al and Theresa Medcalf of Barnesville, Ga.; special friend, Karen Martin; special caretaker, Velma Hinton. A graveside service is set for Friday, March 2, 4 p.m. in Greenwood Cemetery, Barnesville. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 1449, P.O. Box 6003, Thomaston, Ga. 30286 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105. Coggins Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
