Judge English has resigned!

Our sister publication, The Journal-Reporter, Zebulon, and WSB TV have confirmed that Griffin circuit Judge Paschal English has resigned. In his resignation letter to the governor, English related he felt it was time for he and his family to move in a different direction. English, who appeared on the television show Survivor, apparently could not survive the same controversy that resulted in the resignation earlier this week of former Judge Johnnie L. Caldwell Jr. The controversy stems from the Crook v. Crook divorce trial in Fayette County and allegations involving one of the attorneys in that case, Susan Brown. The Fulton County Daily Report contacted Brown who declined to discuss Caldwell’s resignation or the unspecified improprieties attributed to Caldwell in court documents. However, another attorney did speak out. Gary S. Freed, told the Daily Report, “Basically, our position was the judge [Caldwell] was not impartial. He was engaged in persistent improper conduct toward counsel [Susan Brown] which was of a sexist and intimidating nature, which we believe impacted his rulings in the case.” Brown rejected the judge’s repeated overtures, Freed said. Brown later complained about Caldwell’s conduct to Judge English, the circuit’s chief judge. English “ignored it,” according to Freed. More on this story as it develops.
