Ladies scrimmage a success

The Lamar County Lady Trojans opened the 2009 softball season in fine fashion outlasting AAA Mary Persons 2-1 in a pre-season scrimmage in Forsyth last Wednesday. Lamar began the regular season over the weekend with the Spalding Invitation Tournament in Griffin where they played five games in two days. Results from the tournament were not available at press time. Abby Walker pitched five strong innings for the win, allowing no earned runs, to lead Lamar over the Lady Bulldogs. Freshman Tamara Watts pitched a pair of scoreless innings to close out the game and get the save. Hailey McKneely paced the Lady Trojans at the plate, going two for three with a double and a run scored while driving in another. Lamar coach Dave McKenna praised his squad for a superb defensive effort. The Lady Trojans play their first home game of the season Wednesday, hosting Jackson for a varsity/junior varsity doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. Lamar will play in another tournament over the weekend as they travel to Roberta to take part in the Crawford County Invitational at the Crawford County recreation park. Lamar will face Howard Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Mary Persons Friday at 7:30 p.m. before facing the host school Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and Taylor County Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The championship game of the tourney is set for Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
