Lady Trojans make history; start playoff run today

The Lamar Lady Trojans, coached by Jessica Evans and Dana Hutto, topped the Lady Royals of Bleckley County 3-2 in Cochran Oct. 8 to clinch the Region 4AA fast pitch softball title. Lamar hosts Early County today in the first round of the Class AA state playoffs Doublehear games will be played at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Aldora Field. Tickets are $7 as set by GHSA rule. This is the first softball title in the history of Lamar County High School athletics. LC got three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Bleckley answered with two in the bottom of the fifth to account for all the scoring in the contest. The Lady Royals entered as the #1 seed. LC was #2. Lamar ace Lexy Head went seven full innings on the mound, scattering eight hits and striking out 10. She also drove in a run to help her own cause. Alyssa Maisonet drove in LC’s other two runs. To earn a spot in the final, the Lady Trojans had to beat Monticello in a rain-delayed, three-game series on the two days prior to the title tilt. LC took game one 5-4. Head again went the distance on the hill, allowing only three hits and striking out seven. Kayla Hinkley had two hits to pace LC. Makayla Wright had a hit and an RBI. Heather Blevins also drove in a run for LC. In game two, Lamar held an 8-1 lead after batting in the top of the fifth but Monticello got eight in the bottom of the inning and two more in the sixth to take an 11-8 win. Caitlin Tootle and Head shared the mound duties for LC. Jessica Wyatt had three hits to lead LC while Blevins had two. Maisonet drove in two runs. In the critical third game, Lamar edged the Lady Canes 3-2. Maisonet had three hits to pace LC. Wright had two hits and an RBI while Blevins and Wyatt each had a hit and an RBI. Tootle went the distance on the mound, striking out eight and allowing but four hits. Lamar is building a softball powerhouse. The middle school team is undefeated and running up scores on every team they play. Observers say this may be the most talented team of any sport in school history.
