Lady Trojans make history

In its long sports history, Lamar County High School had never won a region championship in softball but that changed last Thursday when the Lady Trojans edged out the Bleckley County Lady Royals 3-2 in Cochran. Fastpitch softball had long attracted athletes in surrounding counties – Pike, in particular – but LC is catching up and catching up fast. The varsity team is laden with young talent and the undefeated middle school team promises to feed more high level players to the varsity in the coming years. Many of these girls have honed their talent at the local recreation department and then moved on to club teams that play challenging travel schedules. Oddly, the championship was decided with just one, mustwin game while the semifinals consisted of best of three series with Monticello that was played here. Region coaches chose that format. The Lady Trojans split a Tuesday doubleheader with the Lady Canes then closed out the series with a Wednesday win. The next day they made history.
