Lady Trojans to battle Fayette Co. for third place trophy

By Ken K. Green The Lady Trojan soccer team will play Fayette County for third place in the Trojan Cup tournament this Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Lamar County Middle School soccer field. The Lamar girls split their first two matches in the tournament, beating Northside-Warner Robins before falling to Upson-Lee. Originally scheduled to open the tourney against Upson-Lee, the Lady Trojans drew Northside when the match between Northside and Pike County had to be canceled due to bad weather and the tournament schedule had to be juggled. Pike played Upson in the first round. Against Northside, the Lady Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes and led 2-1 at the half. The Lady Eagles came back after the break and took a 3-2 lead before Lamar scored a pair of goals to regain the lead at 4-3. Northside tied the match on a corner kick with less than 10 minutes to play and regulation time ran out, sending the game to a penalty kick period. Fatima Guzman went first for Lamar and made a great low shot near the post to keep it out of the keeper’s range. Lady Trojan goalie Alexis Bedgood stopped all four of the shots she faced and Katie Jo Daniel gave Lamar a 2-0 advantage on penalty kicks and a 5-4 match win. Daniel also scored two goals in regulation for the Lady Trojans. Abby Gutierrez and Sydney Tenney added one goal each. With several key players nursing injuries, the Lady Trojans faced a more experienced Upson-Lee team playing many of its younger, less varsity experienced players. They fell to the Lady Knights 5-0. ’Watching some of them play, you could tell they have the desire to compete,’ said Lamar coach Wayne Calvert of his younger players. Upson-Lee advances to play for the Trojan Cup championship Saturday at 2 p.m. at Trojan Field. The Lady Knights also beat Pike County 1-0 (PK 4-2). They will face Morgan County who beat Griffin 2-0 and Fayette County, 4-2, to reach the title game. Other girls matches set for Saturday include Pike County vs. Rutland for fifth place at 9 a.m. at Trojan Field and Griffin vs. Northside-Warner Robins for seventh place at 9 a.m. at the middle school.
