The Lamar County Lady Trojans upset Putnam County on the road in Eatonton Firday night to claim their fourth straight region title. Putnam was ranked #7 in Class A, Div. 1 by MaxPreps. LC was ranked #16.
The War Eagles (18-2) had defeated LC 70-56 in Eatonton on Jan. 28.
Lamar (23-5) hosts the Gordon-Lee Lady Trojans tonight in the first round of the GHSA playoffs. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in the LC gym.
In the region semi-final Thursday, LC topped Social Circle 53-35 behind a 24-point effort from Jaziyah Foster. Foster also pulled 13 rebounds and dealt one assist. Ella Bleu Leverett was also in double figures with 10 points.
Other scorers were Janiya Banks (6), Makayla Watts (6) and Kayla Stewart (5).
Putnam County came into Friday’s thriller off a 69-15 win over Jasper County in the semis and jumped out to a 17-11 lead in the first period. They led 33-24 at the half.
LC outscored the home team 14-5 in the third period to knot the score at 38-38 before winning late 56-54. Leverett led LC with 16 points, 10 rebounds and two assists. Foster and Watts were also in double figures with 12 points each.
Other scorers were Stewart (7), Brianna Jackson (5) and Ashlyn Smith (3).
Leverett wasn’t the only one crashing the backboards. Stewart had 11 rebounds while Foster had eight caroms. Other rebounders were Smith (5), Watts (4) and Jackson (1).
LC is the #5 seed headed into the state tournament. Gordon Lee (12-14) is the 28th seed.
Should the Lady Trojans win tonight, they will host the Elbert County-ACE winner Friday night. Elbert is seeded 12th with ACE landing a #21 seed.
LC and Gordon-Lee had no common opponents in the regular season.
