Lamar County Schools to delay dismissal for solar eclipse

Lamar County Schools will delay dismissal by one hour for all schools on Monday, Aug. 21 due to the upcoming solar eclipse. Middle and high schools will dismiss at 3:30 p.m. Primary and elementary schools will not let out until 4:15 p.m. The school system will not allow any checkouts from any school between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. that day, and all students and staff will remain indoors during those times. No middle school or high school outdoor activities will take place until after 4 p.m. On Aug. 21 Lamar County will see the moon overshadow 95 percent of the sun between 1:07 p.m. and 4:03 p.m., peaking at 2:38 p.m. which is during normally scheduled dismissal. The school system says, ‘We realize the potential inconvenience this delay may pose to families, however, the safety of our students and staff is top priority for our district. Each building is working to establish activities and instruction to take advantage of this event in a safe classroom environment.’ If you have any questions the school board advises to contact your child’s principal.
