Lamar-Macon Co. preview

By Ken K. Green Lamar County travels to Montezuma this week for a Region 4-AA match up with Macon County. The Trojans are 7-0-1 for the season and 5-0 in region play. The Bulldogs are 3-5 overall and 3-2 in 4-AA. When and Where: Montezuma’s Adams-Maffet Field Friday at 7:30 p.m. To get there: Take GA-7 S 41 miles to Fort Valley. Turn right onto N Cameillia Blvd. and follow GA-49 S 8 miles to W Main Street. Turn right onto W Main St. and continue to follow GA-49 S 13 miles to Montezuma and take a sharp left onto GA-90 S then take the 1st right onto S Dooly St. Turn left onto Walnut St. then take a slight right onto Vienna Rd. Adams-Maffett Field will be on the right. The trip is approximately 65 miles total or one hour 20 minutes. Weather: Clear and cool with temperatures in the mid 60s at kickoff. Upper 50s by the end of the game. No chance of rain. Warning: A category 7.0.1 Thunderstorm is brewing and will strike Montezuma Friday night at 7:30. Last week: Lamar County beat Bleckley County 39-7 at Thunder Alley. Macon County won 47-6 at Monticello. Bulldogs other opponents: Beat Crawford County 55-0 and Putnam County 49-6. Lost to Dooly County (21-20), Americus-Sumter (34-18), Peach County (49-0), Bleckley County (51-0) and Northeast Macon (32-8). Series: Macon County leads 8-4. Lamar won last meeting 39-20 in Barnesville in 2009. Macon County’s last win was 20-0 in Montezuma in 2008. Lamar last won in Montezuma 37-21 in 1999. Macon County won the first meeting 20-8 in 1974 in Barnesville. Lamar won the next year 24-19 in Montezuma. Bulldog offense: Averaging 24.6 points per game (Lamar allows 7.5 ppg ppg). Bulldog defense: Yielding 17.5 points per game (Lamar is averaging 39.4 ppg) Top MaCo players: #9 Detrick Carter, Jr. QB and #6 Vashun James, Sr. RB. Macon County head coach: Larry Harold, 1st year, 3-5. Prediction: MaxPreps has Lamar a 25 point favorite. CalPreps projects the Trojans a 42-12 winner. Rankings: The Trojans are ranked #3 in the state by Max Preps, #4 by the Associated Press, #6 by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and #7 by Maxwell Ratings. The Bulldogs are 28th by both Maxwell and Max Preps. Game notes: The Trojans clinched a first round state playoff game with last week’s win over Bleckley County, the 200th victory in school history. A win this week earns Lamar County its second Region 4-AA title in as many years. The Bulldogs rely heavily on the arm and legs of Carter who has ran the ball 53 times for 306 yards and four touchdowns while completing 29 of 55 pass attempts for 449 yards and five touchdowns while throwing three interceptions. His favorite receiver is James who has caught eight passes for 205 yards and two scores. Fans may want to plan to leave early and enjoy a pre-game meal at the famous Mennonite restaurant, Yoder’s Deitsch Haus, located 5252 Georgia Highway 26 East in Montezuma.
