Lamar-Monticello football preview

By Ken K. Green Lamar County travels to Monticello this week for a Region 4-AA match up with Monticello. The Trojans are 4-0-1 for the season and 2-0 in region play. The Hurricanes are 1-3 overall and 0-2 in 4-AA. When and Where: Monticello’s historic Rose Bowl Field Friday at 7:30 p.m. To Get There: Take GA 18 E (Forsyth Highway) to Forsyth. In Forsyth, turn left on N. Lee Street and follow GA 42 25 miles to Monticello. In Monticello, turn right onto W Washington Street then immediately turn left onto GA 11N. Turn left onto W Greene Street and Rose Bowl Field will be on the right. The trip is about 40 miles and just under an hour long. Weather: Mostly clear with no chance of rain and temperatures around 70 degrees at kickoff dropping to the mid 60s by the end of the game. WARNING: A hurricane awaits the Trojans in Monticello but a Big Blue thunderstorm will strike hard and fast to overcome the purple winds. Last week: Lamar County beat Northeast Macon while Monticello lost to Taylor County 47-0. Monticello’s other opponents: Beat Social Circle 32-7. Lost to Morgan County (34-6), Jackson (37-6) and Northeast Macon (24-0). Series: Lamar County leads to five game series 3-2 winning 48-0 in Barnesville last year. Monticello’s last win in the series was in the first round of the Class A state playoffs when the Hurricanes beat the Trojans 21-0 at Rose Bowl Field. Lamar won the first meeting between the two schools 8-3 in in 1972 in Monticello. Hurricane offense: Averaging 8.8 points per game (Lamar allows 8 ppg ppg). Hurricane defense: Yielding 29.8 points per game (Lamar is averaging 27.2 ppg). Top Monticello players: Deon Epps, Tra Jackson and Lane Thomas. Monticello coach: Eddie Roberts is 7-18 in his third season at Monticello and 20-27 overall in six seasons including stops at Elbert County and Johnson County. Prediction: MaxPreps has Lamar a 29 point favorite. CalPreps projects the Trojans a 58-0 winner. Rankings: The Trojans are ranked #5 in the state by the Associated Press, #6 by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and MaxPreps and #10 by Maxwell. Monticello is ranked 51st by MaxPreps and 47th by Maxwell. The Hurricanes are unranked by the AP and AJC top ten. What you should know: The ‘Canes rely heavily on their running game led by the trio of Epps, Jackson and Thomas who rush for a combined ten yards per carry. The Hurricanes are scoreless in the region while the Trojans have yet to be scored upon in 4-AA games. Monticello has been playing at historic Rose Bowl Field since 1926. Monticello and Barnesville’s Gordon Military College prep team played each other from 1958-61 with the Hurricanes winning three of the four games.
