Lamar-Putnam County football preview

By Ken K. Green Lamar County travels to Eatonton this week for a Region 4-AA match up with Putnam County. The Trojans are 5-0-1 for the season and 3-0 in region play. The War Eagles are 2-4 overall and 1-2 in 4-AA. When and Where: Eatonton’s War Eagle Stadium Friday at 7:30 p.m. To Get There: Take GA 18 E (Forsyth Highway) to Forsyth. In Forsyth, turn left on N. Lee Street and follow GA 42 to Monticello. In Monticello, turn right onto W Washington Street then left onto S. Warren Street Take the first right onto E. Greene Street and continue onto GA 16 and follow to Eatonton. In Eatonton, turn right onto S. Jefferson Avenue and take the first left onto E. Sumter Street. Continue to follow to Putnam County Middle School on the right. War Eagle Stadium is on the PCMS campus. The trip is approximately 61 miles or one hour 20 minutes. Weather: Mostly clear with no chance of rain and temperatures in the mid 60s at kickoff dropping into the 50s by the end of the game. WARNING: A Big Blue Thunderstorm will strike Eatonton at 7:30 p.m. and rock the Eagles. Last week: Lamar County beat Monticello 56-13. Putnam County was idle. War Eagle opponents: Beat Greene County 28-14 and Crawford County 32-0. Lost to Morgan County (39-16), Jones County (50-20), Bleckley County (54-16) and Macon County (49-6). Series: Lamar County leads the four game series 3-1 winning last year in Barnesville 27-20. The War Eagles only win over the Trojans was two years ago in Eatonton 20-7. The two schools met in 1984 and ’85 with the Trojans winning both contests. Putnam County offense: Averaging 19.7 points per game (Lamar allows 8.8 ppg ppg). Putnam County defense: Yielding 34.3 points per game (Lamar is averaging 32 ppg) Top War Eagle players: #33 Gary Waller (SR., QB), #32 Ladarien Reeves (SR., RB), #14 Damien Brannon (SR., WR). War Eagle head coach: Ben Reaves (31-28-1) in six season at Putnam County. 20th overall (90-112-1) with stints at Newton and Social Circle Coach Reaves is 1-1 against Lamar County. Prediction: MaxPreps has Lamar a 23 point favorite. CalPreps projects the Trojans a 48-6 winner. Rankings: The Trojans are ranked #4 in the state by the Associated Press, #7 by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and MaxPreps and #8 by Maxwell Ratings. Putnam County is ranked 44th by MaxPreps and 30th by Maxwell. The War Eagles are unranked by the AP and AJC polls which rank only the top ten. Game notes: Graduation hit the War Eagles hard after last season leaving them without several star players including All-State running back Marteze Waller who now plays for Fresno State. Waller’s younger brother Gary runs the Putnam offense completing ten of 13 pass attempts for 173 yards, one touchdown and one interception while gaining just over eight yards per carry on the ground. Waller is joined in the backfield by Reeves who has 63 carries for 440 yards and a touchdown. Brannon is the top receiver with four catches for 79 yards.
